TTD to declare Tiruchanoor as ‘No Liquor Zone’

TTD to declare Tiruchanoor as ‘No Liquor Zone’
Tirupati , Nov 11 :

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) authorities are mulling to declare the temple town of Tiruchanoor as ‘no liquor zone’ during the Brahmotsavams from November 21.

TTD executive officer LV Subramanyam during his visit to Tiruchanoor to review the arrangements for the temple festival hinted at banning liquor and sale of meat during the nine-day mega event.

Though the TTD top brass has mooted the idea now, political parties, women’s associations and organisations have been for a long-time demanding the government to declare Tirupati and its surrounding areas as liquorfree and meat-free areas for maintaining the sanctity of the temple town.

It has became a regular practice for local politicians and social activists to raise the demand, whenever the government invites tenders for allotting liquor shops once in two years. But, neither the government nor the TTD pay any attention to it.

But, this time, albeit on a temporary basis, the TTD executive officer has mooted the idea of banning liquor in Tiruchanoor during the Brahmotsavams and sought the cooperation of excise department staff.

“We want the festivities to be held in a spiritual atmosphere.

The executive officer spoke to the Tiruchanoor panchayat officials for prohibiting meat and liquor sales during the Brahmotsavams, to which they responded positively,” said TTD PRO Ravi.

Excise department rural CI Nagaraju Reddy said the TTD has brought the proposal to their notice and they are gearing up in this regard.

There are no liquor shops around the temple premises, he said adding that they were holding talks with liquor shop owners in other parts of the town to shut down their business during the nine days.

Meanwhile, devotees as well as local women urged the government and the TTD to ban liquor in the temple town on a permanent basis.

“Though we are demanding the ban for a long time there are no positive signs in this regard and we too understand that the total prohibition of liquor is not possible under the prevailing conditions, where the excise department is not in a state to implement the High Court orders to restrict the liquor traders from collecting a price higher than the MRP,” Raghuram, a local social activist said.
